Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services

Learn More

Dr. Natalie Young is a veterinary pharmacist with a unique blend of clinical, regulatory, and leadership experience across the field. As the Clinical Veterinary Pharmacy Director for Vets Pets and Managing Partner of Companion Pharmacy she brings deep expertise and a strong commitment to advancing patient care through pharmacy excellence.

Dr. Young has worked in veterinary pharmacy since 2016 and is among the very few pharmacists to have earned both Diplomate status through the Society of Veterinary Hospital Pharmacists and dual Board Certification: as a Veterinary Pharmacist and in Sterile Compounding (BCSCP). She currently serves on the national Specialty Council responsible for setting standards and writing the certification exam in Sterile Compounding for the Board of Pharmacy Specialties.

Over the course of her career, she has led the development and accreditation of several veterinary pharmacy programs. She is a Past President and former Chairman of the Board of the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists, where she served for over a decade. She also served as Compounding Chair for the American Pharmacists Association and continues to support its policy and educational work.

Dr. Young is deeply engaged in professional education and advocacy. She is a regular columnist for the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (and former Industry Council Chair), serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and directs the Veterinary Pharmacy Residency Program in partnership with UNC. She also holds the title of Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Education and is a frequent guest lecturer and preceptor.

Her clinical and educational work is widely recognized. She regularly speaks for VETgirl, contributes to Clinician’s Brief, and reviews veterinary drug monographs for Plumb’s Veterinary Drugs. Dr. Young holds pharmacy licensure in over a dozen states and is actively involved in efforts to improve the pharmaceutical care of animals nationwide.

A North Carolina native, Dr. Young is a graduate of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and holds both a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before entering pharmacy, she worked as a chemist – an experience that shaped her attention to detail and scientific approach to patient cases.

When she’s not writing textbooks, she’s usually outdoors training for her next long-distance run or working on her latest Basset Hound rescue project. She’s also an unapologetic fan of old-school hip hop.

Tanner Trantham

PharmD, BCSCP
Pharmacist-In-Charge

Learn More

Dr. Tanner Trantham is a veterinary pharmacist whose entire career has been dedicated to advancing pharmaceutical care in animal health. As Pharmacist-in-Charge at Companion Pharmacy, he has been instrumental in building the central pharmacy from the ground up, helping lead operations and clinical strategy in close collaboration with Vets Pets leadership.

Dr. Trantham is one of the few veterinary pharmacists in the country to earn Board Certification in Sterile Compounding (BCSCP), a distinction that reflects his expertise and commitment to high-quality, compliant compounding practices. A double graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he earned both his undergraduate degree and Doctor of Pharmacy from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

His passion for veterinary pharmacy began during his clinical rotation with Dr. Natalie Young, who invited him to serve as her Clinical Pharmacy Intern after recognizing his dedication and clinical insight. While in pharmacy school, he was selected as a teaching assistant to Dr. Robert Shrewsbury, one of the nation’s foremost experts in pharmaceutical compounding, and completed international study programs in the Netherlands and Australia—experiences that broadened his global perspective on pharmacy practice.

After completing his PharmD, Dr. Trantham joined Dr. Young’s team as a Staff Pharmacist and quickly became the lead pharmacist in her sterile compounding program. He played a critical role in achieving PCAB Accreditation and establishing one of the nation’s leading veterinary compounding services.

He has also been recognized nationally for his leadership in the field, having served as Sterile Compounding Chair for the American Pharmacists Association and as Member-at-Large for the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists. He continues to mentor students as a Preceptor for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

When Steve Thomas and Dr. Young began planning the centralized compounding operation for Vets Pets, Dr. Trantham was their first call to lead the effort as Pharmacist-in-Charge. They were thrilled when he accepted—and he’s been fully immersed in the project ever since.

Outside of work, Dr. Trantham is a proud dad to his boys (one human, two Basset Hounds), and (unsuccessfully) tries to find time for fishing or working on his vintage pickup truck restoration projects. Though he won’t mention it himself, he was also a standout baseball player back in the day.

Sabrina Frerichs

PharmD
UNC Veterinary Pharmacy Resident

Learn More

Dr. Sabrina Frerichs discovered her passion for veterinary pharmacy while completing a clinical rotation under the mentorship of Drs. Natalie Young and Tanner Trantham at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. From her very first days in the program, it was clear she had both the aptitude and heart for the field – bringing exceptional clinical acumen, research experience, and a thoughtful, collaborative approach to patient care.

Dr. Frerichs holds a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Chemistry and Biology, with a specialization in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, from Loyola University Maryland. She went on to earn her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was inducted into multiple academic honor societies and developed a strong foundation in sterile compounding while working at Duke University Hospital for three years during graduate school. She also contributed to meaningful research at the Johns Hopkins Behavioral Medicine Lab and co-authored several publications.

Recognizing her talent and dedication, Drs. Young and Trantham invited her to join their Clinical Veterinary Pharmacy Internship program, which she completed with distinction. After graduation, she continued her work in veterinary pharmacy under Dr. Young’s leadership until they both transitioned out of the program following its acquisition by investors. When Dr. Young launched the UNC Veterinary Pharmacy Residency Program in 2024, she was thrilled to see Dr. Frerichs among the applicants. Following a highly competitive selection process, she was selected as the program’s inaugural resident.

The Community-Based Veterinary Pharmacy Residency Program is the first of its kind, designed in collaboration with the UNC Chapel Hill and Vets Pets. In alignment with the school’s mission to go beyond traditional practice, the program trains pharmacists to

become innovative clinical practitioners in community-based, outpatient veterinary care. Dr. Frerichs began her residency in June 2025 and continues to help shape the future of veterinary pharmacy.
